Ramble

The best music gear insurance in 2026.

Five programs in the United States write real coverage for working music gear. Here is how they compare on what they cover, what they charge at the floor, and how much of the paperwork falls to you.

THE ROUNDUP

The five programs, side by side.

Each entry names the segment it serves rather than a score, with sources linked under every card.

  1. Number 1: Ramble

    Best for ease of use

Ramble is the strongest program on this list because of the software. Nothing else in the category is built to catalog, manage, track, and cover a collection in one place. The coverage behind it is still run by program managers with decades of experience, on a policy that matches any other here.

Ramble runs the same policy wording as MusicPro, under the same program administrator and the same underwriting team, so the coverage is proven rather than new. What is new is everything around it. Gear goes in by chat, photo, voice, spreadsheet, or forwarded receipt, and AI does the identifying, the valuing, and the itemizing in seconds. What comes out is a real collection with photos and values, not a PDF schedule, and the insurance sits on top of it.

    Established
    Newest program in the category
    Minimum premium
    $175 a year, plus a $10 fee
    Cataloging
AI intake from chat, photos, voice, spreadsheets, or email receipts
    Backed by
Bolton Street Programs, with capacity from the Accelerant Risk Exchange, in partnership with D'Addario
    Strengths
    • A real collection app rather than a PDF schedule: photos, condition, year, serial, and declared value on every item, organized into folders
    • Shows what the whole collection is worth and which items are currently insured
    • The only program in the category where AI writes the itemized schedule for you, in seconds, from photos, text, voice, a spreadsheet, or a receipt
    • Email a receipt to receipts@therambleco.com and the AI reads it, adds the gear to your collection, and emails back to say what it added
    • A concierge team will still catalog an entire collection by hand on request, at no charge
    • A public profile you can share, with per-item and per-folder privacy controls
    • Quote appears on screen during the application, with no agent confirmation step
    • Claims are filed in the app, and the photos already in your collection go into the claim package
    • Add or remove gear any time, with only the pro-rated difference charged or refunded
    • Rental reimbursement up to $2,500 a day, to $25,000, with no deductible on the reimbursement
    • Worldwide all-risk coverage with professional use included, in all 50 states, with no association membership required
    • Computer hardware and software can sit on the same policy as the instruments
    Trade-offs
    • Minimum deductible is $100 per claim, with no zero-deductible option
    • No business or performance interruption coverage, which Clarion and Anderson both include
    • Newly acquired and borrowed gear covered to $25,000, where Clarion's published limits reach $50,000

  2. Number 2: MusicPro

    Sister program to Ramble

The same policy as Ramble, from the older of the two programs. Bolton Street Programs administers both, the underwriting team is the same, and the wording is the same document.

MusicPro has been insuring music professionals since 2000 and has by far the longer record of the two sister programs. Because the coverage is identical, the choice between them is not about the policy at all. It is about whether you want to type out the itemized equipment list yourself.

    Established
    2000
    Minimum premium
    $175 a year
    Cataloging
Online equipment list, or a downloadable Excel form
    Backed by
Bolton Street Programs, on Hanover paper
    Strengths
    • Same program administrator, same underwriting team, and the same policy wording as Ramble
    • More than 11,000 music professionals covered
    • Covers computer hardware and software alongside instruments and recording gear
    • No exclusions or limitations for theft from a vehicle
    • Newly acquired property to $25,000 for 30 days, and borrowed or rented property to $25,000 for 30 days
    • Self-serve equipment list updates that charge or credit the pro-rated difference
    • Same rates for everyone, with no association tiers
    • Also writes studio liability and special event coverage, which Ramble does not
    Trade-offs
    • Manual input: the itemized equipment list is the customer's to build, by form or by spreadsheet
    • The FAQ documents emailing a .xls file in for processing when the upload fails
    • An equipment list, not a collection: no photos, folders, or collection value
    • Cell phones and trailers are excluded from the program

  3. Number 3: Clarion

    Great for orchestral players

The oldest name in the category and the one most orchestras use, with a coverage form built specifically around fine instruments.

Clarion insures more than 18,000 musicians and over 40 symphony orchestras on Starnet paper, and the form carries enhancements nobody else offers, including valued-at payout terms and the right to repurchase a settled instrument. It is also the most traditional program here: nothing binds until a licensed agent confirms it.

    Established
    Over 50 years
    Minimum premium
Not published; quotes by phone or form
    Cataloging
Quote request, then a schedule an agent confirms
    Backed by
Starnet, a Berkley Underwriting Partners company
    Strengths
    • Deep standing in the classical world, insuring over 40 symphony orchestras
    • "Valued At" claim basis: the amount insured is the amount collected
    • Right of repurchase if a settled instrument is later recovered
    • Right to keep undamaged parts, so a broken bow's frog stays with the owner
    • Inflation guard on newly manufactured instruments less than two years old
    • Business interruption endorsement at $250 per incident, included at no cost
    • Newly acquired and borrowed instrument coverage reaching $50,000
    • No-deductible policies available, subject to underwriting approval
    • Claims can be reported online around the clock
    Trade-offs
    • Mysterious disappearance is one of five basic exclusions on the published coverage highlights
    • Nothing binds online: "No binder, insurance policy, change, addition, and/or deletion to insurance coverage goes into effect unless and until confirmed directly by a licensed agent"
    • Manual input: schedule changes are uploaded to the site by the customer
    • Appraisals required for items over $5,000, per their published materials
    • No published rates or minimum premium, so there is nothing to compare before calling
    • A $3,000 minimum total insured value applies to online quote requests

  4. Number 4: Heritage

    Great for fine wooden instruments

Thirty-five years on carved wooden instruments, with a coverage form that names the things which actually damage them.

Heritage insures against change in temperature and humidity, which matters enormously to anything with a carved top, and covers faulty workmanship during the repair process. The workbench policy for makers, restorers, and repair shops has no real equivalent anywhere else in the category. The trade-off is scope: this is a program for instruments, not for rigs.

    Established
    1991
    Minimum premium
    $200 a year ($350 for business policies)
    Cataloging
Written application, then a client portal
    Backed by
    Specialty program; carrier not published
    Strengths
    • Thirty-five years of specialization in professional-quality wooden and bowed instruments
    • Covers change in temperature and humidity, a genuine differentiator for carved instruments
    • Covers faulty workmanship during the repair process, which Ramble excludes
    • Devaluation coverage for a repair that leaves an instrument worth less
    • Policies can be written with no deductible at all
    • Coverage can be issued in minutes once they have the application
    • A distinctive workbench policy for makers, restorers, and repair shops
    • Mysterious disappearance does not appear on their published exclusion list
    Trade-offs
    • Manual input: a written application and a scheduled item list the customer maintains
    • Client portal access takes about one business day to verify and authorize
    • The highest published minimum annual premium in this group
    • Focused on wooden and bowed instruments rather than modern electronic rigs
    • Laptops are excluded from equipment coverage

Source: Heritage players and collectors coverage

  5. Number 5: Anderson Group

    Great for schools and associations

The association specialist, with real depth in orchestras, schools, dealers, and rental inventories.

Anderson is endorsed by groups from the National Flute Association to the International Society of Bassists, and the Signature form was built for musicians rather than adapted from a commercial policy. Flood and earthquake are included at no extra cost. The best rates run through association membership, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes.

    Established
    1991
    Minimum premium
$175 a year for most instruments
    Cataloging
Quote request, then a schedule the customer supplies
    Backed by
    Endorsed by leading musician associations
    Strengths
    • Over three decades of specialization, with endorsements from leading musician associations
    • All-risk, "Agreed" Stated Value coverage provided worldwide
    • Flood and earthquake included at no additional cost
    • Professional and business use covered with no exceptions
    • Diminished value coverage after a repair
    • Performance interruption up to $600 per actual loss sustained
    • Musical scores coverage, available on request
    • Real depth in orchestras, schools, dealers, and rental programs
    • Preferred rates for schedules above $100,000
    Trade-offs
    • Manual input: the customer supplies the schedule, and a from-scratch quote takes one to two business days per their own program materials
    • The best rates are reserved for members of participating associations
    • Acoustic piano coverage applies at a designated location only
    • Electronic equipment is an optional add-on rather than part of the base form
    • Rental reimbursement is capped at $100 a month for up to six months
    • Appraisals generally requested for instruments over $15,000
